Deputy Sheriff - Trainee

$78,977/year

This classification will receive a 4% salary increase effective June 2025 and 3% in June 2026. Additionally, significant incentives and additional pay are available including Uniform Allowance and Education Incentive.

Take the first steps in joining the exciting world of law enforcement by applying for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position! This position is designed for individuals who have no prior law enforcement experience but are interested in getting started. Applicants selected for this position will be enrolled in a California POST-certified academy where you will learn all the skills necessary to be successful with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office as a sworn peace officer. Upon graduation from the academy, you will be sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff I with full peace officer powers.

Deputy Sheriff I

$82,888 - $87,110/year

This classification will receive a 4% salary increase effective June 2025 and 3% in June 2026. Significant incentives and additional pays are available including Uniform Allowance, Education Incentive, Shift Differential, Tahoe Branch Assignment Premium, Bilingual Pay, etc.

This position is open to those who have already earned a California POST Basic Academy Certificate. In this position you will receive extensive supervision and training from experienced personnel through our Field Training and Jail Training programs. Upon successful completion of these training programs and your probation period, you may receive a non-competitive promotion to Deputy Sheriff II.

Deputy Sheriff II

FY 24-25: $96,158 - $147,203/year*

FY 25-26: $100,004 - $151,895/year*

FY 26-27: $103,004 - $155,554/year*

*Base rate at top step and incentives

This classification will receive a 4% salary increase effective June 2025 and 3% in June 2026. Significant incentives and additional pays are available including POST Certificate Pay, Uniform Allowance, Education Incentive, Shift Differential, Tahoe Branch Assignment Premium, Detective Division Pay, Tahoe Branch Assignment Premium, Bilingual Pay, Special Teams Pay, etc.

This position is open to individuals who have a minimum of one year of prior law enforcement experience, as well as a valid California POST Basic Certificate. If you are applying from outside of California, you must have obtained the California POST Basic Waiver or the California POST Basic Certificate.  Placer County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services to a large area, covering the rural areas of Roseville bordering Sacramento, to the beautiful city of Tahoe.  Due to the diverse nature of the areas we serve, we are able to explore new and innovative ways to protect and serve our community in the most efficient way possible.

If you are currently employed, or have employed within the last year, with one or more years of experience as a peace officer and possess a valid California POST Basic Certificate, you may be eligible for an expediated recruitment known as the Public Agency Eligibility List – PAEL process. Extra help deputy

$46.23/hour

This classification falls under the Deputy Sheriff II or Deputy Sheriff II PAEL Job Posting. On the application, you must mark that you want to work part-time.

The County of Placer is seeking to fill a position specifically within our Court Security Unit through extra help employment. Our Sheriff’s Office relies on extra help staff to ensure minimum staffing levels, manage special projects, and particularly to cover court security stations. This role is crucial for maintaining safety and security in the courtroom, as well as filling in for regular staff during vacations or sick leave.

How is Extra Help employment different than permanent employment?Extra Help positions are temporary positions set for a maximum of 960 hours for a fiscal year. There is no accrual of seniority or benefits, such as sick leave, or health insurance. Extra Help employees are not eligible to apply for promotional recruitments.

Available Incentives to Qualified Employees:

  • Intermediate POST Pay: $500 Per Month for Deputy Sheriff II

  • Advanced POST Pay: $1,000 Per Month for Deputy Sheriff II

  • Detective Division Premium Pay - $510 per month

  • Bilingual pay – $464 per month

  • Canine Pay - Pay of six (6) hours per fourteen (14) day work period paid at time and one half.

  • Educational Incentive

    • $100 per pay period for Associate’s Degree (AA)

    • $125 per pay period for Bachelor’s Degree (BA)

    • $175 per pay period for Master’s Degree (MA)

  • Hazard Premium Pay: $150 per month (Increasing to $200 per month effective 7/12/2025) When assigned to Special Enforcement, Certified Divers, Hostage Negotiations, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, and/or Air Support Operations.

  • Longevity Pay: Additional 5% to 10%

  • Night Shift Differential Pay: Additional $4.41 per hour

  • Stand by/Call Back Pay: $27 for weekdays and $30 for weekends and holiday paid for in units of 8 hours.

  • Tahoe Branch Assignment Pay: $1,000 per month

  • Training Officer Pay: $389

  • Tuition Reimbursement $1,300.00 max per fiscal year on approved classes

  • Uniform Allowance: $1,065 per year for Auburn area and $1,215 per year for Tahoe, Colfax, Dutch Flat, and Foresthill areas
